Ceylon Cinnamon
Cinnamon is another popularly traded spice for its culinary and medicinal use. It is widely used in a number of industries for its aroma and flavor. Cinnamon is native to Sri Lanka and India and is also found in tropical regions throughout the world. Sri Lanka and India are one of the major producers and exporters of whole and powdered form of cinnamon. It is also widely used in these countries for its culinary use. Cinnamon has strong aroma and they are sweet and have good taste. Due to the popularity of the cinnamon of Ceylon sometimes cinnamon are also called as Ceylonese cinnamon.
Ceylon Cloves
It is an aromatic flower bud of a tree in the family Myrtaceae. It is used as spice in cuisine all over the world. Clove tree is an evergreen tree whose height ranges from 10-20 m. Apart from being used in cuisine; clove is also used in other industries for its medicinal use and therapeutic value.
Ceylon Pepper
Black Pepper is one of the most internationally traded spice belonging to the family of Piperaceae. The plant is cultivated for its fruit and is popularly used as a spice and seasoning after drying.
Ceylon Ginger
Ginger is native to southern parts of China but now it is cultivated in all the tropical and sub tropical regions of the world including Ceylon/ Sri Lanka. Nearly half of the world production comes from India whereas Brazil and Jamaica are the major producers. Other major producers of Ginger are Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Australia, Fiji and Brazil.
Ceylon Nutmeg
Nutmeg Tree is widely grown for obtaining two of the very important spices, namely Nutmeg and Mace. Both the spices are derived from the same plant; nutmeg being the seed kernel derived from the fruit and mace being the lacy covering on the seed kernel. It is one of the most sought after and internationally traded spice after pepper, chili and basil. Nutmeg tree is native to Moluccas in Indonesia. Even today Indonesia is a major producer of nutmeg. Apart from Indonesia, Grenada, Sri Lanka (Ceylon), India, China, Malaysia, Zanzibar, Mauritius and Solomon Island are also the major producers of Nutmeg and Mace.
Ceylon Cardamom
Cardamom finds extensive use in Scandinavian and Indian cuisine. It is sweet and aromatic and is very pleasant. It is found in Asian countries and also Australia depending on the type. It is one of the most expensive spice after saffron and vanilla. South India and Sri Lanka are the major producers of Cardamom. Cardamom produced in Sri Lanka is of very good quality. They have good aroma.
